Osmanović: BiH maintains the lowest rate of HIV infection in the region

SARAJEVO, September 5 (FENA) - Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Adil Osmanović received a delegation from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Joint UN Program against HIV/AIDS, led by Special Advisor to the Joint UN Program (UNAIDS) Michel Kazatchkine.

The two sides discussed future steps aimed at achieving sustainable responses to HIV and tuberculosis, as well as greater investment of domestic funds at the time when financing of these projects by international organizations is coming to an end.

Ministar Osmanović said that with the support of the Global Fund and the participation of all levels of health authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, cooperation with the non-governmental sector and other sectors, and with the support of UNDP BiH, a quality system for the prevention and early onset of treatment of these diseases has been established,  and thus Bosnia and Herzegovina has managed to retain the lowest rate of HIV and AIDS in the region, and the number of tuberculosis patients in Bosnia and Herzegovina was halved in this period.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina recognized the importance of providing support to the non-governmental sector and for the first time, the budget of the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina for 2018, includes a grant for co-financing projects of non-governmental organizations in the field of prevention of HIV and tuberculosis in Bosnia and Herzegovina, implemented by the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Kazatchkine warned that the countries of the region - Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, after the transition from the Global Fund financing of the project to domestic financing, have recorded a large increase in the number of patients, and warned that authorities at all levels in BiH so that they could respond in time and keep the low rate of contagion.

Over the past decade, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has invested significant grants in Bosnia and Herzegovina for the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of HIV, AIDS and tuberculosis.
