SARAJEVO, August 28 (FENA) - A commemorative session on the occasion of the death of renowned Bosnian architect Ivan Štraus (Kremna, Serbia, June 28, 1928 - Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, August 25, 2018), whose numerous buildings in BiH and the world will stay with us as part of his legacy, was held today at the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH.

The secretary of the Arts Department of the Academy, writer Abdulah Sidran, opened and moderated the session, emphasized the importance of the role of architect Ivan Štraus, which was visible not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but worldwide.
President of the Association of Architects in BiH, Dario Kristić, said that he did not know Štraus personally, but that he grew up with watching his designs and his buildings.
“Štraus influenced many other architects in Sarajevo. He had that misfortune to experience the destruction of his works, but also to witness them being rebuilt,” said Kristić.
Ivan Štraus, born in Serbia, grew up in Banja Luka, began his architectural studies in Zagreb in 1947, and graduated in 1958 at the Faculty of Technical Sciences in Sarajevo.
Among the projects that he worked on are the buildings of Elektroprivreda in Sarajevo, the Military Air Force Museum in Belgrade, the Press Center on Mt Bjelašnica for the Winter Olympic Games in 1984, which was completely destroyed during the war and many others.
He received international awards for the building of the Main Post in Sarajevo, the Ministry of Telecommunications building and the Telecommunications Office in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia, 1964, with Zdravko Kovačević, the first prize), the Opera in Sofia (Bulgaria, 1973, with Halid Muhasilović, the first prize), the Great Mosque of Oran (Algeria, with Halid Muhasilovic, 1985, first prize).
He exhibited on the domestic and international scene. He also authored a number of books in the field of architecture.
