SARAJEVO, August 24 (FENA) - The Federation of BiH Archives, on the occasion of marking the 140th anniversary of the Austro-Hungarian mandate to occupy Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Berlin Congress, hosted an exhibition today at Brusa Bezistan in Sarajevo, bringing out the most important details of these dramatic event for Bosnia in the 19th century.

Several panels present chronologically how the process of taking over the administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina went on after the Ottoman rule had it under its control for 415 years, all of which was greatly opposed by the residents and people in Bosnia wanting the country to finally gain its independence and be free.

Director of the FBiH Archives, Adamir Jerković, said that the Berlin Congress in 1878 undoubtedly represents one of the most crucial events in history when the seven great powers decided that BiH be entrusted to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy to administrate it.

However, when the establishment from Austria-Hungary came to BiH, thinking that they would be warmly welcomed, Jerković recalls that the troops of General Josip Filipović came to strong resistance, while the Austrian troops showed great cruelty.

The importance of this historic event was also commented by former member of the BiH Presidency Stjepan Kljuić, pointing out that 1878 was a pivotal year for BiH, not only because it was the moment when Bosnia was liberated from the Ottoman authorities, but also because of the fact that at that time it fought and tried to finally obtain its full independence.

However, the arrival of Austria-Hungary, said Kljuić, meant also a cultural revival for BiH when many potentials of the country came to expression. Many architects came to BiH, railways, electricity, and a tram was first introduced in Sarajevo.

The exhibition unites these two dimensions of the Berlin Congress and the Austro-Hungarian takeover of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also we remember Hadži Lojo and Šemsekadić's insurrections, which for three months were stranded at the battlefields trying to push back the invading forces of General Josip Filipović.

At the time, Bosnia was being attacked by 200,000 foreign troops who fought against 79,000 domestic fighters. The National Committee, or the provisional government, desperately tried to resist and build an independent state on the remnants of the Ottoman Empire.
