Operational HQ: Strengthen border control and speed up migrant accommodation

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 16 (FENA) - The BiH Operational Headquarters for migrant issues at today’s session concluded to continue with strengthening of border control and to accelerate the procedure of accommodation of migrants, the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina announced today.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to strengthen border control in order to reduce the number of illegal migrants entering our country.

The pressure of migrants on the eastern border of BiH is growing, but it was also emphasized that the reinforcement for the BiH Border Police, provided by the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), the Directorate for Coordination of the Police Bodies of BiH and the RS Police has been giving results and is reflected in increased number of diverted attempts to illegally enter BiH.

The operational HQ has also accepted the offer of the FBiH Police Directorate to assist the BiH Border Police, whose members will also be deployed to the most vulnerable parts of the BiH border in the upcoming period.

After determining the locations for reception centers for migrants, that are harmonized with representatives of local communities, it is planned to begin with reconstruction of facilities in Bihać and Ušivak near Sarajevo next week, while at the same time the "Sedra" Hotel in Cazin is being  renovated and adapted for these purposes.

There are already 150 migrants in this facility, mostly families with children, and another 50 people will be accommodated next week.

The HQ has decided for the temporary reception center to be in the "Agrokomerc" facility in Velika Kladuša, and Minister Mektić announced that he will soon visit this municipality and talk with the representatives of the local community about the remaining technical details.

Today, they also discussed about strengthening the capacities of the Foreigners' Affairs Service of BiH, and it was agreed that due to the increased influx of migrants in the area covered by the Bijeljina Field Center, the Service will also organize operations during the weekend.
