Mektić: Migrants mostly enter through Serbia, their goal is Western Europe

SARAJEVO, August 7 (FENA) - Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Mektić said today that there has been a lot of speculation and disinformation about the migrant crisis, and that some media wanted to present it as a "chaotic situation in BiH".

He said that in certain media outlets speculated that there are currently 10,000 to 50, 000 or 60,000 migrants in the territory of BiH which he said is absolutely not true.

He claims that "there is nothing chaotic going on and nothing is different from what is happening in all the Western Balkan countries through which migrants pass."

“Nothing is happening in BiH than is not already happening in Serbia, Montenegro or Albania, and I do not see the need to create such an atmosphere,” said Mektić.

He added that majority of migrants enter BiH through Serbia, which according to the information available to him, already has a large number of migrants.

“Their exclusive goal is to go further, through BiH towards Western Europe. That is why they concentrate in the Una-Sana Canton area because this represents to them the closest road corridor to the EU,” said Mektić.

He points out that this is a European problem and that this requires a European solution and that BiH, or any other country cannot find a solution on their own.

He says that migrants, as a rule, express intention for asylum, although very few of them actually apply for it.

“We have solved the problem with the barracks in Ušivak and we are establishing an immigration center. We have an asylum center in Delijaš, an immigration center in East Sarajevo, and this fully meets the needs of the City of Sarajevo, which is now less burdened with the migrant crisis because migrants are moving towards the Una-Sana Canton,” said Mektić.

He recalled that in the area of the Una-Sana Canton Sedra Hotel is also put in operation for this purpose, where there is still room for the accommodation of migrants. The decision was made that the Agrokomerc facility remains a temporary reception center.

Mektić says the EU has agreed to fund it on an interim basis.

“If we find a larger and a more adequate center to accommodate all those migrants then we will close the one in Velika Kladuša and if not, it will be an interim center as long as there is a need for it. We have a solution for another reception center in the USC area, but I do not want to talk about the location yet,” said Mektić, adding that this will be plenty enough to accommodate all the migrants.

"Our goal is to protect our border as best as possible. In order to cover our border entirely we would need an additional 2,000 police officers,” said Mektić.

Asked about cooperation in this respect with the competent institutions in Serbia and other neighboring countries, Mektić responded that they have very poor communication with them.

He stressed that everyone is hiding information, "they do not want to share them because they are trying to shift the problem to someone else’s turf.”
