Šarović requests exemption of BiH from the decision on steel import quotas

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, August 3 (FENA) - Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina Mirko Šarović sent a letter to the European Commission, Directorate-General for Trade, requesting the exemption of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the implementation of the Commission Regulation from July 17, 2018, on the introduction of provisional measures in connection with the import of certain steel products into the European Union.

Noting that the provisional measures of the European Commission have been imposed without prior analysis of exports to the EU and the impact of such exports on the EU steel industry, Minister Šarović in a letter presented the analysis that show that the exports from our country will not cause damage to the steel industry of the EU member states, nor cause serious market disturbances in the EU.

“Based on all the above-mentioned facts related to the introduced measures, as well as the accompanying analysis available in the Official Gazette of the EU, we expect that the European Commission undertake every possible effort to find the appropriate modality for exempting BiH from the application of provisional measures.

We believe that the European Commission, when implementing the procedure for imposing the mentioned measures, has failed to consider the possibility that the expected trade reorientation could hit the EU partners, the countries of the Western Balkans involved in the stabilization and association process,” stressed Šarović.

We believe that the exemption would be justified on the basis of the exemption of Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, and basis for such a decision are "close economic ties of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the EU".

“In our opinion, the Stabilization and Association Process represents an even deeper form of the integration process, which besides participation in the EEA implies the EU membership, emphasized, inter alia, Minister Šarović in his letter.

Minister Šarović noted that BiH is ready to attend the meeting Brussels, scheduled for September 12, 2018, to discuss the case of provisional measures.
