Rais Kavazović taking part in the conference on religious freedoms in Washington

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, July 25 (FENA) - Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in BiH Husein effendi Kavazović, at the invitation of the Secretary of State of the United States, Mike Pompeo, participates in the work of the Conference on the Promotion of Religious Freedoms in the World, taking place in Washington.

The conference, hosted by the Secretary of State Pompeo, is attended by a number of world leaders, including the most prominent world religious leaders, foreign ministers and representatives of non-governmental organizations who are searching for concrete measures to help promote religious freedoms around the world.

The goal of the three-day event, the first of its kind in the history of US administrations, is to determine policies that will contribute to the promotion of religious freedoms and the protection of the right to religion and belief, especially with minority communities.

In his exposés and meetings, Raisu-l-ulama Kavazović talked about the challenges that the Islamic Community in BiH faces in its work that includes not only the homeland of Bosnia and Herzegovina but also the territories of Serbia (Sandžak), Croatia, Slovenia and the Bosniak diaspora.

He particularly emphasized the increasingly frequent cases of hate speech heard from the part of the BiH officials and like-minded people in the region, as well as an open and non-sanctioned Islamophobia that is being systematically fed in the public sphere.

Rais Kavazovic also pointed to the problem of failure to sign the agreement between the state and the Islamic Community in BiH, even though other traditional religious communities have already signed such an agreement which is a clear example of discriminatory practice.

Kavazović emphasized that religious freedoms are an indicator of the general freedoms in a society and the level of its democracy and that religious discrimination should not exist in modern societies, and especially in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is still dealing with the consequences of ethnic cleansing and the crime of genocide, MINA reported.
