Čović: There is a danger of manipulation of migrants in pre-election period

FENA Dejan Jazvić

SARAJEVO, June 21 (FENA) - Croat Member of the BiH Presidency Dragan Čović believes that the European Union will not make any decisions that would aim towards creating migrant centers in territory of BiH, because it would be too risky.

"I believe that the EU cannot make such decisions, but we need to be very clear. Migrant crisis is a serious crisis and it brought a completely new approach in our and neighbor policies," Čović told FENA, giving example of policies of Hungary, Austria and Slovenia.

He believes that negative treatment towards migrants will be stronger, even though he emphasized he sees the migrant crisis firstly as humanitarian crisis, and then security and political one. However, he warned that humanitarian stage of this crisis already finished in the aforementioned countries and they are now observing problem of migrants as a security and political problem.

"It is inevitable that will happen in BiH as well. BiH is very exposed today, because it does not have its normal infrastructure of state instruments to control that path. We need to be ready for these arrivals, corridors," emphasized Čović.

According to him, there will be no big migrant centers in territory of BiH during the summer months. He emphasized there is a joint effort not to move migrants from area they are located, regardless if it is Turkey, Greece or a third country.

If we underestimate that problem, added Čović, we could have great crisis in BiH, especially in the election campaign, "because someone will use those migrants for calculations and election messages".

"Someone will organize an incident on purpose and build a policy on that in these few months. That can be very dangerous and that is why the BiH Presidency will insist on correcting laws that will be on European level in order to manage this process, even though that is not the main task of the Presidency. To repeat, those poor people who are coming with their children, their entire families, should be observed as a humanitarian problem. However, on the other hand, it is becoming a security problem, because there have been physical incidents in Salakovac and area of Bihać, which ultimately results in a political problem", said Croat Member of the BiH Presidency Dragan Čović.
