Barkley: US wants to see BiH progress on its path to EU-NATO integration

SARAJEVO, June 6 (FENA) - The BiH Presidency Chairman Bakir Izetbegović and a member of the BiH Presidency Dragan Čović received today the Director of European Affairs of the US National Security Council, William Barkley.

Members of the BiH Presidency expressed their satisfaction with the visit of a high-level delegation from the United States, which confirms the continued support of the United States of America to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It was assessed that bilateral relations are friendly and stable, characterized by long-standing proactive engagement of the United States in BiH.

Speaking of the priorities of the incumbent US administration, in terms of the country's foreign policy, Barkley stressed that this visit sends a strong message of the interest of the United States for Bosnia and Herzegovina and its further progress towards EU-NATO integration.

Barkley welcomed the achieved progress and the reforms that Bosnia and Herzegovina has implemented and expressed full support of the United States for the strengthening of institutions, the rule of law and democracy.

The collocutors also emphasized further efforts to reach an agreement on the amendments to the Election Law, and stressed the need to continue activities in order to find a solution.

They also expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation in the field of security policy, especially when it comes to the fight against terrorism and extremism, where Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States have had partner relationship as members of the international global coalition in the fight against ISIL.

Izetbegović, Čović and Barkley also discussed activities and measures for the suppression of illegal migration and the strengthening of the capacities for registration, humane acceptance and treatment of migrants located on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The meeting was also attended by the US Ambassador to BiH Maureen Cormack, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Mathew Palmer.
