SARAJEVO, June 5 (FENA) - A coordination meeting on the initiative of France and Germany on the fight against illicit trade in firearms in the Western Balkans, which is attended by, inter alia, BiH Security Minister Dragan Mektić, is being held today in Sarajevo.
Mr. Mektić informed the attendees in his speech that Bosnia and Herzegovina had started systematically addressing the issue of small and light firearms by adopting and implementing several documents of the Small Arms and Light Weapons Strategy and related action plans.
He added that Bosnia and Herzegovina had a Coordination Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons Control for a number of years, with the task of planning, coordinating, directing and monitoring the implementation of these documents.
"Bearing in mind that the presence of illegal small arms and light weapons favors organized crime, terrorism and as such constitutes a key security risk that slows the economic and development path, Bosnia and Herzegovina is committed to further efforts to reduce the risk of small arms and light weapons in the forthcoming period in all aspects of security," Mr. Mektić said.
As Bosnia and Herzegovina, among other things, is emphasized as one of the sources of illegal procurement and trafficking in arms, following the Ministerial Forum on Justice and Home Affairs for the European Union and the Western Balkans in Tirana in 2012, activities in the area of prevention weapons production and detection, especially through border controls and increased police co-operation, have been carried out, the BiH Security Minister said.
