SARAJEVO, June 5 (FENA) - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo organized a conference "Role of Parliaments and Authorities in the Fight against Corruption in BiH", which discussed cooperation between legislative and executive power in BiH, standards in the fight against corruption, criminal legislation and the protection of persons reporting corruption.
The Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Bruce Berton points out that the Mission, in line with the BiH Reform Agenda, increased its activities in the field of fight against corruption and that OSCE Mission's main partner in this field is the State Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of Anti-Corruption (APIK).
Mr. Berton points out that one of the projects on which the Mission works is to improve cooperation between anti-corruption teams and legislative and executive bodies at all levels, and adds that corruption threatens political stability in BiH.
„Corruption is a threat to BiH's long-term stability. We will work on this issue in cooperation with our Italian friends and all other stakeholders who are interested in eliminating this problem in BiH. We know this is a long-term process, but we hope that with our support we will succeed in our goal,“ Mr. Berton said.
He adds that corruption in BiH permeates all levels of society and no one is excluded, neither politics, judiciary or private entities.
Advisor for Combating Corruption within the Italian Presidency of the OSCE Alfredo Conte is aware that the fight against corruption is a very important political goal in BiH and one of the key preconditions for moving BiH towards the European Union.
„The fight against corruption is extremely important for Italy, which chairs the OSCE. We believe that we can fight this plague only through the cooperation of all authorities, as well as the cooperation of authorities with civil society. We know that much has been done at the local, entity and state level, but even more than that can be done," Mr. Conte said.
He adds that after the conference, he will have a meeting with a collegium of the BiH Parliamentary Assembly where he will again confirm his support and look for ways for even better cooperation.
Hasim Šabotić, the Director of the APIK, said that the Agency, in cooperation with the OSCE Mission and Italian Embassy, had visited five BiH cities and held meetings with representatives of the legislative power and bodies combating corruption.
