Developing practical steps to combat corruption in healthcare and education

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 1 (FENA) - Representatives of government institutions, civil society and international community have developed practical steps to launch the first measures to combat corruption in healthcare and education, starting at the local level.

Legislative changes, law enforcement, raising awareness with students and youth on these issues through various campaigns are some of the innovative ideas that have been discussed over the past two days at the U4 Anti-Corruption Center workshop "Building Integrity and Preventing Corruption in the Healthcare and Education Sectors: What can be done?".

The workshop was organized at the initiative of the embassies of Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom in BiH.

“We cannot solve the problem of corruption quickly, but representatives of different sectors, government institutions and civil society have been involved in the workshop, and they together can find solutions and further steps for dealing with this problem,” said Ambassador of Switzerland to BiH, Andrea Rauber Saxer.

Ambassador of Great Britain to BiH Edward Ferguson warned that corruption must be stopped because "it steals the money in healthcare from the sick and vulnerable, and in education, it stelas the money from children and the future".

“Not everything is that gloomy and a lot can be done. That is why we brought people from all levels of government, from international organizations and non-governmental organizations, to those from the health and education sector. If they do not communicate and cooperate, there will be no solutions. The real work begins after the workshop,” said U4 Counselor for Combating Corruption in Norway, David Jackson.

The focus of this workshop was on increasing the understanding of the corruption phenomenon and the risk of corruption in healthcare and education in BiH, to identify practical solutions and to develop anti-corruption instruments by using good practices and experiences from other countries, stated the Swiss Embassy in BiH.
