SARAJEVO, May 31 (FENA) - In memory of the persecution and murder of 3,176 citizens of Prijedor and the region, employees of the Museum of Crimes against Humanity and Genocide 1992-1995 today in Sarajevo dispersed to the citizens symbolic armbands thus marking the “hite Armband Day that is observed on May 31.

Curator of the Museum of Crimes against Humanity and Genocide 1992-1995, Šejla Bešić emphasized that this institution is marking the White Armband Day every year as a symbol of remembrance of all the victims.

She pointed out that the staff members do their best to explain to the passersby and citizens while dispersing the armbands about the occurrences in Prijedor on 31 May 1992, so that such horrific war crime would not happen ever again.

By placing 102 chairs in Baščaršija and reading the names of the murdered children, the informal group of citizens ‘AntiDayton’ also marked the White Armband Day.

“This is dedicated to the murdered children of Prijedor, but also to all those who have not been found yet. They are the most valuable legacy that we have to respect,” said one of the members of the group, Nihad Aličković.

On 31May1992, Bosnian Serb authorities in Prijedor issued an order through local radio station that the non-Serb population is ordered to mark their homes with white flags or sheets and not to leave their homes without wearing white armbands.

"Serb citizens, join your army and police in pursuit of these extremists. Rest of the citizens, Muslims and Croats, must place white flags on their homes and wear white armbands or will suffer consequences," it was announced on Radio Prijedor on 31 May 1992. It was the beginning of unprecedented slaughter which resulted in killing of 3.173 innocent civilians and imprisonment of 31.000 persons in camps.

Many citizens of Prijedors who heard the call were found in October 2013 in the largest mass grave that the world has yet seen in the village of Tomašica.

"White Armband Day" is being marked in Prijedor and entire BiH and the region in memory of non-Serb victims of Prijedor and its surroundings.
