Ongoing implementation of Emergency Action Plan with regards to migrant crisis

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 29 (FENA) - The Council of Ministers of BiH today received information on the situation in the field of migration and the results of the meeting of the Operational HQ, from 25 May, in line with the conclusions on the regular informing of the BiH CoM at every session.

Over the period of last few weeks, dozens of activities have been carried out on the prevention of illegal immigrants' entry into BiH, from solving the issue of additional accommodation for migrants, and taking concrete steps towards obtaining international assistance to address the migrant crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

According to the data at disposal to the Ministry of Security, from 1 January to 27 May , 4,870 illegal migrants entered and were registered, of whom 423 migrants have applied for asylum.

The referral of additional police officers to the BiH borders has proven to be efficient because illegal entry has been reduced by 50 percent after the adoption of the Emergency Action Plan, and the activities on protecting the border with the eastern neighbors continue with the deployment of additional police officers.

The Council of Ministers has forwarded the European Commission the details of the Emergency Action Plan in connection with the increased influx of migrants in BiH, in order to secure international assistance to addressing the migrant crisis in BiH.

At the same time, the CoM has asked the Council of Europe Development Bank for EUR 1 million to implement the Emergency Measures Action Plan for addressing the migrant crisis in BiH.

The "Ušivak" barracks in Hadžići will be equipped to accommodate migrants, thus expanding the capacities with the already operational Asylum Center in Delijaš and the Immigration Center in Istočno Novo Sarajevo. In the Una-Sana Canton, a new location will be equipped for migrants’ accommodation.

The BiH Security Minister will host a meeting of regional interior ministers on 7 June in Sarajevo in order to further discuss the situation in migration, stated the Council of Ministers.
