SARAJEVO, May 29 (FENA) - Embassies of Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Great Britain in Bosnia and Herzegovina and U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Center organized a workshop in Sarajevo today on "Building Integrity and Preventing Corruption in the Health and Education Sector: What can be done?".

Although BiH has strengthened the legal framework in recent years, as well as research and implementation institutions, corrupt practices still weaken decentralized public administration in health and education.

Using international practices and experiences, the goal of the workshop is to provide a basis for practical initiatives in each sector aimed at preventing corruption.

The Swiss Ambassador to BiH Andrea Rauber Saxer points out that corruption in BiH is a major problem for the development and that it forces people to leave the country.

“At the workshop, we talk about the sectors of health and education because in these areas corruption affects ordinary people the most. We cannot solve the problem quickly, there is no silver bullet for that, but at the workshop, we have representatives from different sectors, institutions and social strata that together can find solutions and concrete steps for this problem,” Ms. Rauber Saxer said.

The workshop focuses on understanding the phenomena and the risk of corruption in health and education in BiH, identifying practical solutions and developing anti-corruption tools.

Advisor at the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Center in Norway, David Jackson, emphasizes that the problem of corruption in BiH is indeed "a matter of life and death," and that without the cooperation of people who have a direct connection with this problem, there cannot be a solution.

“There are many challenges and risks in the education and health sector in BiH, literally it is the issue of "life and death", but not everything is so dark because much can be done. That is why we have brought people from all levels of government, from international organizations and NGOs, and people from the health and education sectors. If they do not communicate and cooperate, there will be no solution,” Mr. Jackson explained.

He added that the workshop was attended by representatives of various levels of government, civil society, financial institutions and relevant international organizations in BiH, who discussed the need for integrity, transparency, social responsibility and linking local initiatives in the fight against corruption.
