SARAJEVO, May 29 (FENA) - Under to the judgment of the Constitutional Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the assemblies of the Herzegovina-Neretva, West Herzegovina and Posavina Canton must immediately harmonize the cantonal constitutions with the Constitution of the FBiH within a period of six months at the latest, in a way that the Serb people are defined as equal to the Bosniak and Croat people in these cantons, and that Cyrillic alphabet has to be defined as an official script, next to the existing Latin script.

At the same time, the term "Bosniak language" must be removed from the Croatian language version of the cantonal constitutions and defined as the Bosnian language, equal to the languages of other constituent peoples.

Until the cantonal assemblies harmonize the constitutional provisions with the amendments, which must be done no later than six months at the latest, in this transitional period, the provisions of the Constitution of the FBiH will be in force.

The judgment, issued on May 16, was announced by the Constitutional Court of FBiH today in Sarajevo.

The Court decided upon the request of the Prime Minister of FBiH and a third of the representatives of the Assembly of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton, who requested a review of certain provisions in the constitutions of the Herzegovina-Neretva, West Herzegovina and Posavina cantons related to the status of the constitutionality of the Serb people and inequality of Cyrillic script, as well as the inaccurate formulation of the name of the official language of the Bosniak people.

The request also referred to Canton 10 (Livno Canton), but in the meantime that cantonal constitution has been harmonized with the FBiH Constitution, so the proceedings before the Constitutional Court were suspended in that part.

Vesna Saradžić, Deputy Chairman of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Assembly, after announcing the verdict, told reporters that this is a big day since the discriminatory provisions in the cantonal constitution have been amended.

Ajman Šoše from the Bosniak caucus also expressed satisfaction, noting that the official language of the Bosniak people will finally be properly defined in these cantons as the Bosnian language.

Attorney Nedim Ademović stated that this Judgment of the FBiH Constitutional Court has finally established the equality of Serbs in the entire territory of the Federation of BiH.
