SARAJEVO, May 22 (FENA) - Embassy of the Republic of Italy to BiH and the OSCE Mission to BiH launched a new project worth 30 000 euros aiming, among other things, at exchange of experiences in fight against corruption between BiH and Italy and how to process those instances.

It was emphasized that corruption is opposite to good management and rule of law and it also a serious threat that undermines democratic principles and long-term stability and reduces level of public trust in elected officials.

Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Bruce Berton emphasized that fight against corruption is one of the main priorities of the Mission, adding that this project will enable effective coordination of activities of officials of legislative and executive bodies on all levels of government and it will improve understanding of jurisdiction and responsibility.

"Fight against corruption is a long-term process that requires engagement of all segments of society," said Berton, adding he hopes that political will, inter-institutional cooperation and engagement of citizens will secure a resistant and efficient system to fight against corruption.

Ambassador of Italy to BiH Nicola Minasi announced that delegation of experts from BiH will visit Italy and attend series of meetings, including the one with Italian MPs and representatives of the Italian Anti-corruption Agency and local anti-corruption agencies.

Special Representative of OSCE in combating corruption Paola Severino will visit BiH and meet with representatives of local government, as well as Italian MP Francesca Businarolo, who helped make the law on whistleblowers.

Minasi said that representatives of all levels of government are invited to these meetings and he expects high turnout, emphasizing that fight against corruption is fight for human rights and rights of citizens.

"Successful fight against corruption requires involvement of the entire system and it needs to be effective. Citizens, MPs, executive authority, judges and prosecutors need to be involved in the process," emphasized Minasi.

Berton and Minasi repeated today that representatives of the international community in BiH can only help fight the corruption, but representatives of BiH authority must solve the problems.

Main partner in this project is Agency for Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of Fight against Corruption (APIK) BiH.

It was emphasized today that great problem in this area is harmonization of laws in sense of different levels of government and it is important to harmonize legal framework to enforce them consistently.
