SARAJEVO, May 16 (FENA) – Female journalists and experts from the field of women's rights from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered in Sarajevo for a two-day conference on the position and protection of female journalists in the BiH media, at which the need was emphasized for networking in order to exercise rights and the formation of "Journalist Women's Lodge" was announced.

During the two-day workshop, participants in the panels on various topics were addressed by female journalists who were often exposed to various forms of violence, especially stressing that violence does not need to be physical only because female journalists are most often exposed to attacks on honor, reputation and integrity.

However, as they said, it is necessary to always react to the attack, if not through court processes that can last for years, then by writing about it because the pen is a powerful tool in the hands of female journalists that women from other spheres may not always be able to use.

They pointed out that there was a lack of solidarity among female journalists, that is, a lack of support from the media community in the moments of the attack but also after it was reported or debated through social networks.

One of the messages from this meeting was also that the fight for gender equality in BiH but also in the world is a burning problem that women face in all segments of society, and when it comes to journalism, they are marginalized due to their appearance and prejudices about "weaker sex".

BiH Human Rights Ombudsman Jasmina Džumhur pointed to the fact that journalists in BiH as a profession are not adequately protected given that they perform a significant function and that is not just a job but a significant social function of informing the public.

“Therefore, even though they are not official persons, they should still enjoy special protection,” she said, supporting the initiative of the Center for Women's Rights and the Association of Women's Judges in the FBiH to amend criminal laws, and that the threat should be defined as a qualified form of threat, but also that stricter penalties should be implemented.

The event was organized by the Association of BiH Journalists in cooperation with the OSCE Mission to BiH and Civil Rights Defenders, and spokesperson for the OSCE Mission Željka Šulc pointed out that this was the first conference to bring into limelight the rights of women in the media, announcing that the OSCE will always support such meetings.

One of the panels of the conference was dedicated to the research by Amer Džihana on the topic of "Position of female journalists, gender equality and access to managerial positions in the BiH media", which showed that women's share among media directors was about 25 percent, while the worst gender structure is in directorial positions in the television sector.

As concluded, the fact is that there is a process of feminization and an increasing number of women in the media, but this process does not follow the feminization of leadership, such as the representation of women in administrative and supervisory boards, managerial and editorial positions, which needs to be changed.
