Ivanić: Germany cares about peace and stability in the entire region

SARAJEVO, May 10 (FENA) - BiH Presidency Member Mladen Ivanić, today in Sarajevo, after returning from Berlin where the members of the BiH Presidency met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, told reporters that they discussed the BiH Election Law and other topics.

“The reason for the meeting was that Germany senses that BiH might enter a crisis, in which it essentially already is. The main reason, but I would not say the only cause of the crisis, is that it is happening in connection with the Election Law,and that was the dominant theme of our conversations,” Mr. Ivanić said at a press conference.

He added that “Germany does not have any solution there, nor is it realistic to except them to come up with a proposal how we should regulate our Election Law”.

“But it was more than clearly stated that Germany was ready to give its experts and its own views, but that the key obligation of political figures in BiH is to solve this issue. I think they are fully aware of potential hazards and instability that could happen especially in the aftermath of the elections, and especially in relations within the Federation of BiH and they want to prevent this, primarily because Germany cares about peace and stability in the entire region,” Mr. Ivanić said.

He added that BiH, "as it is," could also produce instability in the region, not only within BiH.

That is why, he said, the key responsibility on the parties from the Federation of BiH, at this moment primarily the HDZ and the SDA, is to show compromise.

In his words, "there are different approaches between colleagues from the Federation of BiH".

“One approach is the one that refers to the judgment of the Constitutional Court and demands the legitimate representation of the peoples. The second approach comes from the other partner who says 'alright, the legitimate representation of the peoples, but you also have the judgment of the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg, which seeks to bring everyone in and provide the general equality'. Apparently, one excludes the other. There is a fundamental disagreement about what the problem is and I think that these differences are very deep and there is almost no agreement on the definition of the problem. So how can there be any consensus around resolution?” Mr. Ivanić said.

He said members of the BiH Presidency also discussed other topics with Chancellor Merkel, such as migrants and regional issues.
