SARAJEVO, May 9 (FENA) - The Statistics Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina today organized the first national workshop on statistics on chemicals and waste in BiH, where the current activities were presented in order to empower decision-makers to propose policies related to data collection on chemicals and waste.

This has to be done on the basis of evidence, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a member of the UN, has been selected to participate in the pilot project "Chemicals and Wastes under the 2030 Program: Capacity Building for Sustainable Development Goals and Developments in Developing Countries", which will result in a national report on data on chemicals and waste in BiH.

“We are pleased that through June 2019 we will implement this project under the auspices of the UN Agenda 2030. The main purpose is to ensure quality statistical data that will be useful to domestic and foreign users. These activities should also influence the improvement of reporting according to the relevant international environmental agreements,” the Director of the BiH Agency for Statistics, Velimir Jukić, said.

So far, it is known that BiH is getting closer to the regional average, which means that 365 kg of municipal waste is produced per capita, of which about 200 kg is household waste.

At the workshop, UN Environment Project Coordinator Jillian Campbell emphasized that today most people expect to find all the information through Google web search, and if they do not find them, they are disappointed.

“Consequently, most governments in the world have recognized the need to measure appropriate sustainable development goals, which includes waste. We must ensure that people are able to get information on how much food is produced and how much it is thrown away and how it is ruined. Although Google provides a lot of information in this regard, it is not available as needed. This is the goal of our work and why we are here, and we intend to work with the Statistics Agency and other relevant institutions in BiH to find out where the waste comes from and how we can improve knowledge in that area,” Ms. Campbell said.

The participants at the workshop also said that a national roadmap for sustainable development goals (SDG) was currently underway in BiH.

The BiH Statistics Agency is the bearer of the development of the national database for SDG indicators in cooperation with other state institutions.
