70 years of Sarajevo Historical Archives marked (VIDEO)

SARAJEVO, May 4 (FENA) - Seventy years of the Sarajevo Historical Archives, which has been preserving valuable material collected in 650 archival funds and collections since 1948, was marked at Gazi Husrev-bey's Library last night.

It was emphasized that the archival material includes period since 15th century to date, whereas the oldest archival material dates from the Ottoman period. The Oriental Collection preserves 14.000 archival units and it is one of the most important collections of the Oriental archival material in South East Europe.

Director of the Sarajevo Historical Archives Fuad Ohranović said that the Historical Archives, which is located at three addresses, preserves the history of Sarajevo and BiH, and this material is the only witness of existence of people and institutions for decades and centuries after they left of stopped working.

"Our only connection with our ancestors is through archival shelves of this and other archives in BiH. Task of the archive is to preserve it for our offspring and give them an opportunity to learn from our past and choose path of good and avoid the bad," he emphasized.

Ceremony was also attended by Chairman of the Council of Ministers of BiH Denis Zvizdić, who reminded that despite difficult period, the longest and most difficult siege in modern history of war and destruction, Sarajevo managed to preserve valuable archival material.  

He noted that it is very important to interpret and preserve historic facts and historical material in a right and truthful way.

Zvizdić emphasized it is important to put the effort and make sure that the Archives has only one address in the upcoming period.

Minister of Culture and Sport of Sarajevo Canton Mirvad Kurić assessed that over 70 years Sarajevo Historical Archives has been significantly contributing to protection and preservation of continuity of cultural and historical heritage of BiH.

Exhibition "Pearls from the collections of the Historical Archives" was presented last night, which is a part of more than 640 archival collections and the program was attended by representatives of institutions in BiH, international organizations, diplomatic corps and representatives of archives from BiH, Slovenia and Croatia.

Director of the Archives presented letters of thanks to the Sarajevo Museum, Gazi Husrev-bey's Library, Embassy of Spain in BiH, BH Post, Sarajevo TV and the Federal News Agency (FENA).
