Organization and cooperation between local communities is of crucial importance

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 27 (FENA) - Head of the EU Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative to BiH, Ambassador Lars-Gunnar Wigemark visited the Municipality of Sokolac today as part of the implementation of the project "Local Community takes over the EU Initiative", during which the tenth public debate was held on the role of the local community in the EU accession process.

The debate in Sokolac stirred great interest of various representatives of this local community, business people, farmers, representatives of civil society organizations, high school students and youth, and representatives of local government.

Ambassador Wigemark said that it is important to achieve cooperation between local communities, especially when it comes to cross-border cooperation projects.

“It is important to know that a lot depends on the citizens themselves, the people living in the local community and the initiative they show. It depends a lot on them how much they will benefit from the EU integration processes and the opportunities provided by the European Union's prospects," he said.

He added that the local communities are the heart of the European Union, its basis, but also the biggest potential winners of the EU integration process.

“The economic potential of the Municipality of Sokolac lies in the development of agriculture, especially livestock breeding, timber industry and many other sectors,” said Ambassador Wigemark, stressing that the local communities like this one are the bearers of the European integration process in BiH.

The debate in Sokolac was also attended by Ambassador of the Republic of France to BiH, Guillaume Rousson, who emphasized that it is important that this project enables direct contact and dialogue with people living in local communities.

“I am glad to have had a chance to talk to people from Sokolac and wider area today, with people coming from business sector, education or NGO to answer questions about the functioning of the European Union, the perspective and what we advocate for, our ideas, projects and plans,” said Ambassador Rousson.

After the debate, an information and educational fair was held in which representatives of EU-funded projects and other donors were presented their activities , directly contributing to the economic and sustainable development of local communities (ProLocal - Program for Local Self-Government and Economic Development in BiH, funded by the EU and Germany, implemented by GIZ), LEP - Local Development and Employment Program, EU funded project, and implemented by ILO and ReLoaD, Program for Local Self-Government and Economic Development in BiH, funded by the EU, and implemented by UNDP.
