FENA Press release

WASHINGTON, April 18 (FENA) - The legacy of Dayton and the future of BiH and the Western Balkans will be the topic of a hearing to be held in the United States Congress on Wednesday, the Voice of America reports.

The hearing will be held before the Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives.

The Foreign Affairs Committee is chaired by Republican Ed Royce of California.

It is also planned that Matthew Palmer, Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Saša Toperić, Senior Fellow and Director of the Mediterranean Basin, Middle East, and Gulf Initiative, from the Center for Transatlantic Relations, Philippe Leroux- Martin, Director for the Rule of Law, Justice and Security at the American Institute of Peace and Kurt Bassuener, Co-Founder and Senior Associate of the Democratization Policy Council take part in the subcommittee hearing.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is on the agenda of the US Congress 15 days after Palmer's visit and a meeting with political party leaders in order to help reach a decision on changes to the Election Law.

In an earlier interview with VOA, when asked about whom he considered the most responsible for the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Palmer said that he believed that the responsibility is shared by the institutions of power in BiH and, finally, "there is responsibility of the leaders at all levels to identify the changes that need to be to implemented, reforms that will help reverse these trends, and to bring Bosnia and Herzegovina back on the path of integration into the European system."
