ZENICA, April 17 (FENA) - Within the framework of the EU ProLocal Local Governance and Economic Development Program implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Department for Cooperation of the European Union Delegation to BiH and the office of the German Organization GIZ in Zenica, a roundtable was held under the title "Are Enterprises in BiH Flood Resistant?", at which the participants presented a "Guide to Prevention and Response to Floods for Small and Medium Enterprises in BiH".
This is a program worth 13 million euros and is co-financed by the European Union and Germany for a period of three years, with a view to supporting the positive trend of economic recovery of small and medium-sized enterprises from the areas affected by floods in May 2014.
The roundtable was attended by representatives of companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina affected by the floods and which have been the beneficiaries of the EU ProLocal grant funds, experts supporting the recovery of the private sector after the floods, as well as representatives of the EU Delegation to BiH and the EU ProLocal program.
“In the implementation of the program, we strive to support local authorities to engage with small and medium-sized enterprises in an integrated public early warning system to help small companies avoid losses caused by natural disasters. We continue to work on supporting the companies and continue to work on a local development program strategy, which is primarily oriented towards export, tourism and agriculture,” said the Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to BiH Melvin Asin.
This program also supports the development of innovative products and services that enable enterprises to be more efficient and to engage in international value chains while simultaneously improving the conditions in a local business environment.
“The program is focused on small and medium-sized private companies, especially in the field of metal, wood, agriculture and tourism, and we are trying to work with municipalities to improve their competitiveness as they have to create the environment that will be suitable for the development of these companies. Through this program, 93 companies received grants for individual projects within the development partnership. However, we also have a series of grants to other institutions to introduce novelties and new processes to help innovation in this sector. The results of the program can already be monitored, so we have companies that are now exporting to the markets of Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia and even China,” said the GIZ Director for BiH Brigitte Heuel-Rolf.
The businessmen who have joined the implementation of the project shared their experiences in the three years of cooperation with GIZ.
The participants of the roundtable were presented with a "Guide to Prevention and Response to Floods for Small and Medium Enterprises in BiH", developed under EU ProLocal Program with the aim of providing practical recommendations for measures to be taken to prevent and mitigate flood damage, and is based on the experiences of companies that suffered flood damage in May and August 2014.
