No true reconciliation in BiH or the rest of Western Balkans

FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, April 9 (FENA) - Reconciliation in BiH has not been achieved unless we consider ending the war in that context, it is said in the conclusion of the research titled "Reconciliation Process in the Western Balkans and Turkey", presented today in Sarajevo.

It was noted that reconciliation is a process that has its ups and downs depending on the electoral processes in which the media, in agreement with politicians, put focus on the discourses that do not lead towards reconciliation.

Research Coordinator for Bosnia and Herzegovina Jasmin Jašarević said that we expect the most in the reconciliation process from the civil society organizations, and then from the representatives of the government within certain regional initiatives.

He emphasized that some new modalities in the reconciliation process should be applied, since more than 20 years have passed since the wars in this region, and we now have a generation of young people who have no one to reconcile with because they were not in conflict.

One of the conclusions of the survey is that states have not fully accepted responsibility for their role in the conflicts, and therefore there is no consensus on accountability in the observed societies.

Also, the research states that the post-conflict state-building is much more difficult because it requires a wider reconstruction of political, economic and cultural relations. From this perspective it can be said that reconciliation has not been accepted, but that we are in a transitional process that was initiated but not brought to an end and we have not achieved trust among different ethnic groups.

The research was carried out in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. The project was financially supported by the European Union.
