BiH Ombudsman Institution congratulates International Roma Day

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, April 8 (FENA) - The International Roma Day is celebrated on April 8, in honor of the first World Congress of Roma, held from 8 to 12 April 1971 in London, one of the most important events in the history of Roma.

Although some progress has been made in the past few years in order to improve the situation of the Roma population, the Roma community in Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to face many obstacles to accessing their rights and durable solutions as a result of long-standing marginalization and exclusion from social life.

The Ombudspersons conclude that it is necessary to continue working actively and systematically in order to improve the position of Roma in the area of employment, housing, health care, education and all forms of involvement in social, social, cultural and political life.

First of all, the competent institutions must ensure that every person of the Roma national minority has identification documents, which is a prerequisite for exercising all other rights.

The authorities at all levels, according to the Ombudsman's assessment, should promote cooperation between municipal institutions, centers for social work, Roma associations and schools in order to spread information on the importance of education.

In terms of employment, it is necessary for state, entity and cantonal bodies in the field of employment to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the existing employment programs and to approach the creation of new programs for the employment of Roma.

Self-organization of Roma is of great importance, their work in local communities and the presentation of call-up practices.

Through various forms of association, they are able to influence the unjustifiable negative context linked to the Roma people in the public.

The Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina Nives Jukić, Ljubinko Mitrović and Jasminka Džumhur extended their sincere greetings to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, members of the Roma national minority, on the occasion of marking April 8 – International Roma Day with the best wishes and hope that in the future we will continue the joint struggle for a better position of Roma in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated the BiH Ombudsman Institution.
