Preserve water as natural resource closely connected to health

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 21 (FENA) - World Water Day is marked every year on March 22 with the aim of raising public awareness and directing global attention to the importance and significance of water, and promoting the sustainable use of existing water resources.

Under this year's slogan "Nature for Water", solutions are already being explored that are already available in nature itself and which can help us to meet the challenges of the modern world of the 21st century.

The data that 1.1 billion people currently have no access to drinking water is concerning, and 2.4 billion people worldwide live without basic sanitation in their homes, which significantly affects their health, but also education and everyday life.

Environmental pollution and climate change around the world trigger alarming crises with water shortages, whereas floods, droughts and water pollution are further aggravating already degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes. Our neglect of the ecosystem further diminishes the possibility of providing drinking water for all people in the world, their survival and advancement.

The solutions offered by nature itself have the potential to solve many of our current problems with water and water supply while helping us use modern "green" technologies. By planting new forests, re-linking the rivers with their floodplains and regenerating wetlands, it is possible to restore equilibrium water cycles and improve human health and life.

The new sustainable development program consists of 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and particularly important is goal no. 6 - to provide sanitary conditions and access to drinking water for all, which obliges the world to ensure for all people environmental protection, reduction of pollution and safe access to drinking water.

This 21st century is the century of water and it is clear already today that the existential problem of mankind is a growing lack of drinking water.

Therefore, it is necessary to appeal and draw attention to the importance of preserving water as a natural resource that is closely related to health, biodiversity and energy. Without water conservation, no progress in improving the current situation, nor remaining UN Millennium Development Goals can be achieved.

It is necessary to work intensively on educating the public on the importance and conservation of water, and to interest the public to be involved, as much as possible, in the creation and implementation of water management plans.

“We must be aware that water resources are not unlimited and that drinking water supplies are rapidly decreasing. In particular, children should be taught to conserve water from the youngest age, to love nature, to be sensitive to the issues of environmental protection, because they will in future make decisions about development. In the coming years, water will be one of the main environmental, economic and health issues. Without water there is no life,” the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs stated.
