FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, March 20 (FENA) - Members of the Joint Commission for Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH PA) and the Council of National Minorities in BiH today discussed with the members of the Association of Roma Women "Better Future" from Tuzla the political participation of Roma women and their participation in the work of the Council of National Minorities in BiH.

The meeting highlighted the numerous problems the Roma face in BiH, with particular reference to the status of Roma women in BiH society.

The collocutors pointed out that many Roma settlements in BiH were illegally built and warned that the issue of residence and accommodation is a burning problem because, according to the current legislation, in order to achieve certain rights, all persons in BiH must have evidence of ownership, co-ownership or possession of an apartment, house or another housing facility.

The participants of the meeting exchanged views on how to ensure the best possible healthcare for the Roma population in BiH and to solve problems related to their education.

They also discussed the modalities of cooperation of the associations of national minorities in BiH with the aim of their better coordination with the Council of National Minorities in BiH.

In this regard, members of the Association of Roma Women "Better Future" stressed the need to discuss and achieve some progress in defining the criteria for the election of members to the Council of National Minorities in BiH.

Members of the BiH PA Joint Commission for Human Rights expressed support for resolving the problems encountered by associations of national minorities in BiH and stressed that in the coming period a thematic session should be organized to discuss the rights of the Roma population and the position of Roma women in BiH society, the BiH PA Public Relations Department stated.
