Nikšić: SDP ready to cooperate with civic parties at the elections

SARAJEVO, March 19 (FENA) - The presidency of the Social Democratic Party of BiH (SDP) today expressed full readiness for the cooperation of civic parties in order to "win this year's elections".

"The SDP respects the identity of the Democratic Front (DF), Our Party (NS) and the Civic Alliance (GS), and without wanting to jeopardize this identity in any way, we are ready to discuss the unification after the election. We are also open to the possibility of agreeing that DF and GS, as political parties of the social democratic orientation, immediately integrate into the work of the SDP, while we are willing to discuss with NS the manner of cooperation and joint action because they have declared themselves as the social-liberal party of the center,” said SDP president Nermin Nikšić.

Speaking about the SDP's activities in Republika Srpska, Mr. Nikšić stressed that he supports the agreement reached on the formation of a pro-European bloc and a joint platform in the RS elections.

“SDP has already received support from the Socialist International and the Party of European Socialists for the next election campaign, and if we decide to unite after the elections, we will be ready to include them,” Mr. Nikšić said.

In his words, the goal of the SDP is not only to unite the civic and left parties, but to strengthen the state of BiH and its institutions, which can only be achieved through the cooperation of all democratic forces, including those not gathered in these four parties, offering a clear alternative to the current government.

The political opponents of the SDP are, as Mr. Nikšić stresses, the ruling national parties and the situation in the country. DF, NS and GS were never the opponents.

Considering the DF's proposal for the principles of holding a unification congress, it was concluded that "the shutting down of the SDP cannot be discussed" and that "the DF’s conditions for unification are unacceptable because there is no way that they can lead to the unification of the left".

Therefore, the SDP invited DF to declare whether it will stick with the signed cooperation agreement, and if it does, then they should state clearly whether they are ready to sign the Coalition Cooperation Agreement for the upcoming elections and after the elections.

If the DF expresses readiness for this, the SDP will submit a draft coalition agreement within the next seven days.

The SDP presidency also decided today to call on Željko Komšić to withdraw the "one-sided" candidacy for the BiH Presidency in order to open a debate within the bloc on the process of choosing a joint candidate for the position of a member of the BiH Presidency.
