Trgovska Gora in the focus of today's Seminar on importance of nuclear safety

FENA

SARAJEVO, March 19 (FENA) - Deputy Chairman of the BiH Joint Defense and Security Commission, Borislav Bojić, said that the Seminar on the importance of nuclear safety is an opportunity to draw attention to the issue of Trgovska Gora which is of great importance for BiH, while the Minister of Spatial Planning, Civil Engineering and Ecology of Republika Srpska Srebrenka Golić warned that the population living in the region around the future disposal site is considering mass departure because they believe that life in these municipalities will be pointless if the disposal facility is built.

The seminar was organized today in Sarajevo by the State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety, the BiH Joint Commission for Defense and Security and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In his introductory address, Mr. Bojić pointed out that the Commission's desire is to ensure that BiH's interests on the issue of Trgovska Gora are not neglected and that whenever there is a chance, he will draw attention to this.

He noted that the BiH Joint Commission for Defense and Security, among other things, supervises the work of the State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety.

“We consider this sector essential because, although we do not have nuclear facilities, the development of awareness of nuclear safety is extremely important for our citizens and general security in BiH,” said Mr. Bojić.

He especially emphasized that the BiH Parliamentary Assembly discussed in more detail the issue of nuclear safety when the issue of building a radioactive waste storage facility in Trgovska Gora was finalized.

He pointed to the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency does not deal with any kind of arbitrage.

“The International Agency, in keeping with its mandate, is neutral in dealing with any disputes or misunderstandings between its member states, and thus even when it comes to this issue between BiH and Croatia,” he explained.

Minister Golić, who is also the Chair of the Working Group formed by the Council of Ministers on the issue of Trgovska Gora, stressed that there is a soil near the disposal site that is suitable for landslides and earthquakes, which is an additional problem.

She noted that the Government of Slovenia had proposed to the Croatian Government to build a joint disposal site in the location of Vrbina, but Croatia refused this because it would be located near the Sava River and would jeopardize its watercourse and location from which inhabitants of Zagreb and surrounding places are supplied with drinking water.

Ms. Golić then asked what would happen to the inhabitants of Bosnia and Herzegovina living near the Una River and use its drinking water.

In connection to this, she said that she would fight with all legal means to prevent the construction of this disposal facility.

She assessed that BiH institutions should be more active bilaterally in talks with authorities in Croatia to thwart their intention to build the radioactive waste storage facility at the place where they were planning.

Also, Ms. Golić's opinion is that the representatives of the BiH diplomacy should make a bolder step forward in order to jointly solve this problem after a serious discussion with representatives of the Croatian authorities.

She warned that the 230,000 inhabitants of the aforementioned region near the Una River close to the disposal site are considering mass departure because they believe that life in these municipalities would be pointless if the waste disposal facility is built.

As she said, most of these people are farmers, so it is questionable whether anyone will want to buy their products because they are grown at a location near the nuclear waste disposal site.

Director of the State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety of BiH Marinko Zeljko told reporters that the aim of the seminar was to inform the representatives of the legislative and executive authorities of BiH about the work of this Agency and its responsibilities in relation to radiation and nuclear safety.

Referring to the issue of Trgovska Gora, he said that this Agency only provides expert analyzes regarding Croatia's intentions on the issue of disposal facility construction, adding that if Croatia wants to build a nuclear waste disposal facility, it must comply with all international, European and other standards.
