SARAJEVO, March 16 (FENA) - The Regional Conference "Implementation of the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe", organized by the BiH Gender Equality Agency, is being held today in Sarajevo within the project "Strengthening the capacities of institutions for addressing gender-based violence in BiH", which is financially supported by USAID.

The conference aims at sharing experiences and good practices, identifying the standards missing in the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in BiH, and regional linking and establishing closer cooperation with all relevant partners.

Director of the BiH Gender Equality Agency, Samra Filipović-Hadžiabdić, emphasizes that it is the responsibility of BiH, as a member state of the Council of Europe, to fulfill the obligations arising from the Istanbul Convention - the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, and to monitor all events and activities related to the activities covered by this Convention.

“It is the responsibility of BiH, as a member state and member of the Council of Europe, to organize responses to all forms of violence, so that competent authorities can, in accordance with their legal and constitutional powers, prevent, investigate, punish and provide reparation for victims,” emphasized Ms. Filipović-Hadžiabdić.

She recalls that in 2015 BiH adopted a Framework Strategy for the implementation of the Istanbul Convention and that the goal is to ensure an equitable system of prevention and protection of victims of violence in BiH.

Within the Project, an initial study is planned in five areas of importance for the successful prevention, protection and support for victims of gender-based violence. The study will be the basis for planning further, concrete measures.

She emphasized that much has already been done regarding the harmonization of BiH legislation with the Istanbul Convention and that now the focus is on examining the situation in all areas concerning violence, such as legislation, social and health care.

The expert team will present preliminary analyzes, after which the focus groups will be formed with the relevant representatives for each area of analysis.

The Regional Conference is part of a wider reform effort by the BiH Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees to strengthen the capacity of gender equality institutions to address gender-based violence.
