Conference held on topic of 'Recruiting and Keeping the Best Women (and Men)'

SARAJEVO, March 9 (FENA) - A conference on "Recruiting and Keeping the Best Women (and Men)" was held in Sarajevo on the occasion of marking the International Women's Day, organized by the BiH Ministry of Defense and the EUFOR Command in BiH.

It was an opportunity to present the results of the achievements of the BiH Ministry of Defense regarding gender integration and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 - Women, Peace and Security, as well as to show the values and expertise of BiH Defense Ministry staff in activities dedicated to active role of women and a gender issues analysis, raising awareness and promoting gender equality in the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of BiH.

The participants of the conference were addressed by BiH Minister of Defense Marina Pendeš, EUFOR Commander Major General Anton Waldner, Ambassador of Sweden Anders Hagelberg, BiH Security Minister Dragan Mektić, Chair of the Coordinating Committee for the Implementation of UN Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace and Security" Samra Filipović-Hadžiabdić, NATO Commander in BiH Brigadier General Robert Huston and Deputy Head of EU Delegation to BiH Khaldoun Sinno.

Minister Pendeš reminded that the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 is being implemented by the Ministry of Defense through the cooperation with the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees, the BiH Gender Equality Agency and the non-governmental sector, as well as through the cooperation with the NATO Headquarters in Sarajevo, EUFOR, UNDP and embassies of partner countries.

Also, Minister Pendeš stressed that at all levels of the BiH Armed Forces, education and information on the importance of women's participation in military forces and support missions have been organized, and that approximately four thousand male and female members of the BiH Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces commands and units have become familiar with Resolution 1325, through training and field visits.

The representatives of the BiH Ministry of Security, RS MIA, FBiH MIA, SIPA, and representatives of EUFOR missions from the UK and Northern Ireland, representatives of EUFOR missions from the Republic of Ireland and US Armed Forces, also spoke about the experiences, challenges in recruiting and keeping women, as well as measures to increase their participation, stated the Public Relations Office of the BiH Ministry of Defense.
