SARAJEVO, March 7 (FENA) - Head of the Rule of Law Department of the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina Richard Wood said that success in combating corruption was key to the European Commission's positive opinion on Bosnia and Herzegovina's application for membership in the European Union.

This he told reporters after meeting with the head of the Office for Combating Corruption and Quality Management of Canton Sarajevo, Erduan Kafedžić, on the occasion of the official visit of representatives of the EU Delegation to BiH to the Office.

Mr. Wood stressed that during the pre-election campaign, the EU would monitor how many politicians will put the fight against corruption on the list of priorities in their platforms.

Politicians now have a chance, Mr. Wood said, to clearly demonstrate commitment to the fight against corruption by supporting the Bill on the Prevention of Conflict of Interest in BiH Institutions.

He stressed that the importance that the EU attaches to anti-corruption agencies at all levels of government is unquestionable and that the EU has already invested millions of KM in the fight against corruption in BiH.

Mr. Wood said that every year polls show that BiH citizens are increasingly concerned about corruption, which is also the main reason why the youth is leaving.

He stressed that last year some 30,000 people left BiH, while in the past three years that number amounted to 170,000 citizens of BiH.

“The people who left are university educated, speak foreign languages, and these are the people that you need to keep in BiH. It is exactly them who do not want to fight the system that prevents them from getting equal employment opportunities,” Mr. Wood said.

He believes that the fight against corruption requires good coordination, communication and cooperation, as well as 'removal from the political arena'.

He concluded that corruption was the most serious form of criminal offense because it undermines the basic principles of equity and equality, which has a negative impact on the entire society, and that corruption prevents investments that bring economic prosperity.
