Commissioning of HPP 'Medna' marks the beginning of the end of the Sana River

FENA Press release

RIBNIK, March 6 (FENA) - On the occasion of the launch of the small hydro power plant "Medna" installed on the Sana River, the Coalition for Sana, today stated that "this event marks the beginning of the end of one of the most beautiful and cleanest rivers, whose name actually means health."

“Prior to the commissioning of the Hydro Power Plant "Medna", we marked the beginning of the destruction of the Sana River. We want to expose the lies and promises, because this hydro power plant will not bring any good. We fought hard against the HPP "Medna" together with the local community from the very beginning, however, the interests of the investors were stronger,” said Nataša Crnkovic from Banja Luka's Environmental Center.

This ecological organization claims that the destruction of the Sana River points out to a series of irresponsible moves from the ecological, economic, legal and moral aspect.

Goran Krivić, a coordinator of the Coalition for Sana, challenges the purpose and even cost-effectiveness of this project.

“We consider the granting of subsidies to Austrian-German Consortium ‘Kelag’, or, more precisely, the granting of money that belongs to the citizens of this country, the plundering of our own people. An economic study has proven that the state is at loss in the amount of more than 1,000,000 KM. We stand to lose much more, our natural environment and our health,” Krivić said.

Destruction of the Sana River will not go unnoticed, because the Coalition for Sana plans to monitor the operation of this HPP and its environmental impact, but also to initiate a procedure for the protection of the Sana River source, stated the coalition that gathers 23 associations from eight cities in the basin of the river.

Opening of the mini HPP "Medna" in Donji Vrbljani in the municipality of Ribnik, which has cost more than 20 million euros, is scheduled for today, and the planned production power of the plant is 4.9 megawatts.
