SARAJEVO, February 27 (FENA) - On the occasion of the completion of a major Roma activist initiative in the framework of the project "Young Roma Men and Roma Women for Rights and Inclusion", a conference was held today in Sarajevo that gathered numerous members of this population and presented the results achieved through this project.

Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to BiH Khaldoun Sinno awarded certificates for the six, new selected initiatives that will be implemented in the following period in Donji Vakuf, Tuzla, Vitez, Prnjavor, Bijeljina and Travnik.

Sinno praised the work of these young activists, adding that young people have different problems, especially if they come from a disadvantaged group or a population, emphasizing that the Roma community needs support and equality.

He believes that this project shows that changes in BiH are possible, and although sometimes it takes time for them to become visible, they are possible.

“The EU recognizes that the Roma population is in a disadvantaged position and will continue to work on their better integration in society. Since 2007, seven million euros have been secured for various projects, and we are cooperating with all levels of government,” explained Sinno.

Regional Director of CARE International for the Balkans Sumka Bučan underlined that young people from Roma communities have showed that small resources can do much, stressing that the Roma are in an unequal position in relation to the constituent peoples and that the future Election Law will affect young Roma people because they the future of the country along with other young people.

Over the past four months, more than 50 young Roma men and women from Donji Vakuf, Travnik, Prnjavor, Vitez, Fojnica, Bijeljina, Tuzla and Vukosavlje were involved in this activist initiative, who after organizing educational modules, designed and implemented more than 30 small activities in their Roma communities.

The organization of Roma communities, humanitarian campaigns, infrastructure development initiatives, educational workshops, preservation and protection of Roma cultural and historical monuments are just some of the initiatives that were designed and realized by young people from Roma communities through this project.

In this way, they showed that through this kind of activism it is possible to create positive stories and a better life for the Roma population.

In the period to come, in cooperation with these municipalities, a number of activities will be launched, such as the implementation of five small grants in the amount of 5,000 euros for concrete changes and improvement of the living conditions of the Roma population.

The project also envisages the employment of five young Roma men and women, who would be directly engaged as a link between Roma communities and municipalities.
