Čović-Grandi: Migration a very important area of human rights protection

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, February 26 (FENA) - The BiH Presidency Chairman Dragan Čović met today with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, with whom he discussed a number of issues related to the scope of work of High Commissioner Grandi, with special attention to the system for the reception of refugees in terms of the protection of human rights.

Čović stressed that migration is a very important area of human rights protection, and that BiH is working to provide all possible support to migrants in terms of protection of their rights and dignity.

He also said that helping migrants is our moral obligation, but unfortunately, it is not enough to deal with what might happen if our societies do not work together.

He also conveyed his support for the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajčak, in their determination to mobilize all forces by the end of this year in order to finalize and adopt the Global Compact for Safer and Reliable Migration.

This also includes the implementation of the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants, adopted on 19 September 2016, as a solid political orientation aimed at improving the way the international community responds to the challenges of large refugee and migrant movements, and long-term refugee situations.

High Commissioner Grandi pointed out that there is a tangible improvement in the protection of the human rights of migrants, but he also recommended that the system be additionally improved, the BiH Presidency said.
