TIBiH presents Corruption Perceptions Index for 2017 – BiH ranked 91st

SARAJEVO, February 22 (FENA) - According to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Transparency International for 2017, Bosnia and Herzegovina is ranked 91st out of a total of 180 countries with a score of 38 on a scale of 0 to 100, which is a slightly worse result compared to the 2016 rank, it was pointed out today at a press conference of Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina (TIBiH).

The results of the CPI for 2017 were presented by the Chairman of the TIBiH Governing Board Srđan Blagovčanin and Ivana Korajlić, program manager for public relations.

As it was noted, CPI is a kind of measure by which Transparency International ranks countries around the world every year in terms of perceived level of corruption with a focus on the public sector, with the scale from 0 on to 100; 0 representing the highest level of perceived corruption, while 100 represents the lowest level.

According to the results of the research, BiH holds the same position on the CPI list as Albania, Guyana, Sri Lanka and East Timor. When it comes to the region of the Western Balkans, Bosnia and Herzegovina remains behind Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo which are ranked from 57th to 85th place, while Macedonia records the worst result in the region and is ranked 107th.

Considering the global ranking, the group of countries with the lowest degree of corruption contains New Zealand, Denmark, Finland Norway and Switzerland, while at the very bottom of the list are Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, South Sudan and Somalia.

TIBiH believes that this year's CPI testifies to a worrying trend and stagnation, and that, despite the growing focus of the world on the fight against corruption, a large number of countries, including BiH, have done almost nothing to fight corruption more efficiently and to improve the situation in that area.

Chairman of the TIBiH Governing Board Srđan Blagovčanin pointed out that the data speak for themselves and testify to the escalation of the problem of corruption in BiH with devastating effects on the functioning of institutions, as well as the state and society in general.

“The devastating consequences of corruption are seen in variety of ways each and every day, and proven in the mass exodus of BiH citizens from the country. They do not have job opportunities because of employment that is based solely on narrow and personal interests,” said Blagovčanin, underlining the problem of 'political corruption' that stems from the way in which political parties in BiH have been established and function to this day.

The only thing that is encouraging, as he said, and represents a unique opportunity, is the new EU strategy for the Western Balkans, which in an unambiguous way emphasizes as a key problem "the state being a hostage of the narrow circle of people in the government pyramid, and the establishment of the rule of law as the most important priority."
