Kovač: It would be irrational to reopen the issue of BiH-Croatia state border

SARAJEVO, February 19 (FENA) - Chairman of the Republic of Croatia's Foreign Policy Committee Miro Kovač and Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH Nermina Kapetanović headed today's meeting in Sarajevo confirming at which they confirmed to continue to work on improving bilateral relations and that Croatia is ready to again put in focus the outstanding issues of the two countries, including the issue of the state border.

In this regard, after the meeting, Kovač expressed the view that the issue of the state border should not be opened because it is a "Pandora’s box".

“There is a State Border Agreement between BiH and Croatia signed by Franjo Tudjman and Alija Izetbegović in the late 1990s and which has been applied since the day of signing. It works and the borders are defined, so it makes no sense to reopen this issue” - says Kovač.

He is convinced that reopening the issue of the state border would be more damaging for Bosnia and Herzegovina than for Croatia.

The final decision on this issue, says Kapetanović, should be made by the Croatian Government and the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, which hold regular meetings throughout the year.

A positive sign in resolving the issue of the state border is seen in today’s meeting of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Croatian Parliament and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH at which Kovač pointed out that the State Border Agreement between BiH and Croatia can be terminated.

“It is possible to terminate the agreement – for one of the two parties to verbally cancel it, but we should be aware of the possible consequences of such act and I repeat I do not see it as realistic and rational and I suggest that we deal with the issues that are important for the lives of people both in Croatia and BiH,” said Kovač and added that Croatia expects the political actors in BiH to uphold the Constitutional Court decision on the Election Law, that is, the amendments to the Election Law, which will enable equality of all peoples and the constituting of the government after the elections.
