RS VP Salkić writes to HR Inzko: Events in RS becoming serious, threatening peace

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, February 16 (FENA) – Vice-President of Republika Srpska Ramiz Salkić sent an open letter to the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Valentin Inzko in which he urged him to take the measures at his disposal to curb the system and individuals who do not want a lasting peace in BiH.

In addition to assessing that events in Bosnia and Herzegovina's entity of RS have been getting pretty serious recently and are threatening to undermine peace, Mr. Salkić reminds Mr. Inzko in his letter that he had previously pointed out to the situation in RS when it comes to violation of human rights, the Constitution and laws, the right to language, but also the violation of the equitable representation of constituent peoples in institutions.

He believes that these warnings had gone without an adequate response, which in some way “gave wings” to individuals, groups, the Government and the President of Republika Srpska, and “encouraged them and made them act even more radically.”

In December 2017, Mr. Salkić received a letter from the RS Interior Minister in which, he claims, the Minister was carrying out political and police pressure, instructing him how he should act and what he should do.

“As a democratically elected representative, I must act according to my free will, according to my conscience, respecting the Constitution and laws. Those who needed to give me that freedom, it is exactly them who are pressuring and denying it,” Mr. Salkić underlined in an open letter sent to Mr. Inzko.

He believes that everything culminated on February 13, when RS President Milorad Dodik directed open threats to him to “watch what he is saying and discipline himself” and he also gave populist statements that he would sanction Mr. Salkić by reducing his salary.

“Such activities can lead to serious consequences. I am afraid that due to the lack of adequate responses from the relevant institutions and the OHR in the past, at this moment the situation can escalate and get out of control,” Mr. Salkić warned.

He also expressed concern about the development of the situation in returnee communities, because if Dodik can threaten the Bosniak Vice-President or RS, then what can other citizens of non-Serb ethnicity expect?
